What is Genetic Testing?
Genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins.
It is an incredibly useful tool for identifying changes or mutations in DNA that could lead to genetic disease.
These are tests on blood and other tissue to find genetic disorders.
Genetic Testing Involves With :
Genetic testing involves carrying out a range of tests on samples of DNA.
Taken from blood, hair, skin, saliva, amniotic fluid or other tissues.
The DNA sample is then sent to the laboratory where scientists look for specific changes in the DNA to find and identify any genetic disorders.
The laboratory results are then sent in writing to the individual’s doctor or genetic counsellor.
So that they can discuss them with the patient.
Why Genetic Testing Needed?

Diagnostic testing is used to identify or rule out a specific genetic or chromosomal condition.
Prenatal Testing :
Finding a genetic disease in an unborn baby.
Prenatal testing can lessen a couple’s uncertainty or help them make decisions about a pregnancy.
Carrier Testing :
Carrier testing is used to identify people who carry one copy of a gene mutation
that they could pass onto their future children.
Predictive Genetic Testing :
Testing an adult for a genetic disease before they have symptoms, usually where the disease runs in the family and they want to find out if they may also be affected.
Pharmacogenetic Testing :
Determining the best dose or type of medicine to give an individual patient based on their genetics.
Forensic Testing :
Forensic testing uses DNA sequences to identify an individual for legal purposes.
This type of testing can identify crime or catastrophe victims, rule out or implicate a crime suspect, or establish biological relationships between people.
